The RHS Libraries are home to many wonderful treasures relating to the history of gardening and horticulture. They hold some of the rarest and earliest printed books on gardening and botanical art, with volumes in the Lindley Library dating back to the mid-17th century.

Our aim is to make our collections available to members, students and researchers, in our London headquarters and RHS Gardens as well as our digitisation programme, so that everyone can enjoy and learn from these important resources.

This appeal aims to conserve a number of our priceless and unique items that are currently too fragile or damaged to make available for research or display.

The painstaking restoration work needs to be carried out by conservation experts with specialist knowledge and skills.

One such item is the 1630 album of watercolour flowers by Pieter van Kouwenhoom.

plant hunter journalsConservation Appeal: RHS Plant Collector Journals

Between 1821 and 1864 the Royal Horticultural Society commissioned ten plant hunters to travel the world in search of new ornamental, tropical and commercial plant species. A large proportion of all plant introductions to British gardens during this period were a result of these RHS collectors.

The RHS Lindley Library holds unique manuscripts, journals and correspondence detailing their travels. Today these handwritten documents – including letters, finances, articles of agreement, and plant and seed lists – form a comprehensive insight into nineteenth century plant collecting.

These unique records, detailing amazing trips, are now in need of careful attention to ensure that these fragile resources are available for future generations to learn from and enjoy. Each collection of journals, and their associated paperwork, will be fully restored and conserved.
